Newport Jazz Festival: The Original Is The Best |
| In 1954, a young impresario and jazz piano player from Boston, George Wein, got many of the world's best jazz musicians together at Rhode Island's tony resort for a summer festival. It continues to this day
as the mecca for jazz musicians and fans. For a brief period Wein ran a concurrent festival in New York City, then moved the event there entirely. Eventually he returned to Newport, staging a separate New York festival earlier in the
season. Confused? So was ProCreations which published these posters for only five years. Despite the short tenure, Milton Glaser's inaugural Newport poster and John Martinez's follow-ups in the ensuing two years are coveted collectibles.
Thomas Mann, who later rose to fame as a jewellery designer, created what many consider the embodiment of jazz with his 1981 piece for the New York venue. |
