1984 Louisiana World Exposition: Water As The Source of Life |
| The water theme of this World's Fair was very apt. New Orleans sits astride the swamps that define south Louisiana. The city itself is constantly fighting being below sea level, using huge pumping stations
and an intricate levee system to hold back the mighty Mississippi River. What the promoters didn't intend, however, and what made the theme so ironic, was that event wound up "under water" - as in bankrupt. Out of the ashes of
this Fair, one of the last ever attempted, arose the chic Warehouse District residential section and the marvelous posters shown below. The Water Goddess was published in two editions, only one of which is shown below. Though similar in
look, the original lithograph was oversized and published in limited signed and numbered editions. |
